Taverham Hall’s Photography Club Exhibition

The photography club at Taverham Hall is fun and educational in many ways. It gives each individual the opportunity to explore how we see the world and to make the most from our cameras.

The idea is to work on the manual settings and less on the automatic and programmed settings. You will discover how much manual control on your camera’s settings will improve your image making.

During the Autumn Term and number of our parents have been working, Debby Besford, a professional photographer who has many years experience.

During the eight week course they covered location and portrait photography as well as working towards a photographic narrative. The final result is a series of images that can be diverse in subject matter and achieve good results for their technical and creative abilities.

  • Areas covered include:
  • Getting to know your Camera (Megapixels, Resolution, and File Formats)
  • Exposure (ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed) and Metering
  • Histograms
  • White Balance
  • Camera Modes
  • Composition Techniques
  • Basic lighting techniques
  • Focusing
  • Photographic exhibition

The photography club’s exhibition, on display in the Outer Hall, is just one excellent example of four parents who wanted to understand how to work creatively and confidently with their DSLR cameras.

Photography exhibitors: Alex Crossley, Annie Crabtree, Alison Leinster & Jo Gudgin.

Aeromodelling Update

As the aeromodelling club moves into its second year, the standard of workmanship continues to improve, allowing the pupils to build complex structures and models that are capable of performance flight.

Most pupils were baffled when the first project was to build a cube using 3mm sq strips of balsawood. However, all became clear when they started the structure of this term’s project – The Pushycat. This model features a complex structure built entirely from small strips of balsa wood, individually glue together to produce a rigid box structure. The cube skills were put to good use, as the pupils have built extremely light airframes capable of handling high loads.

We also introduced the process of tissue covering the models, which is tricky and requires a great deal of patience. The models are powered by rubber motors and wound using small geared winders and are capable of flying for over a minute in the school’s Sports Hall!

Christmas and Face Britain Competitions

In the run up to Christmas the children in Junior Art Club enjoyed
drawing pictures with a Christmas theme to enter in the competition
organised by Abbotts Estate Agents. We had some wonderful, imaginative
work and all the children who entered were awarded certificates.

Alice was the winner with her lively picture of Rudolf the Red nosed
reindeer and enjoyed her prize of a bag containing all sorts of
goodies.

U11s through the ESTTA regional finals

Taverham Hall School’s Under 13 and Under 11 table tennis teams travelled to Bedford to represent Norfolk in the Zone Finals of the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association (ESTTA) Butterfly National School Team Championships on Saturday 14th January.

Participants for this competition are drawn from county winners and runners up from 7 counties including Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk.

Our Under 13s drew with Horringer Court Middle School (Suffolk) in their first game but won on games by 18 -14. They then played The King’s School (Lincolnshire) who had a player ranked No5 and another ranked 15 in the UK! Our boys put up a good display but sadly lost 7 matches to 1. In their final match they played Bedford Modern School (Bedforshire) in the semi finals and our team of Year 7s found Bedford’s Year 8 team too strong losing 7 – 1, despite good performances, especially by Harry D who was ably supported by Robert B, Edward C and George C.

Our Under 11s won their first match 5- 3 against Burbage Junior School (Leicestershire) after which they played Cliffedale Primary School (Lincolnshire) for a place in the semi finals. This proofed to be a very hard fought game and through great play from all players, Eddie D, Harry W, Felix H and George H they managed to draw 4-4 and win by 18 -16 in games - thus topped their group. In the semi finals they played the second placed team in the other group,Riverside Middle School (Suffolk) and again produced some stunning table tennis to draw 4-4. This time it was very close, yet we prevailed 15-14 (!) in games and as a result were through to the final. The opposition in the final, Croyland Primary School (Northamptonshire) proved too strong, despite a number of very close games and we eventually lost 6 games to 2. However, by finishing in second place our U11 team did qualify for the Regional Finals which will take place in February in Blackburn. A very good result which matches last years performance.

Soft Toys Galore!

With a small and experienced group undertaking the toy making hobby during the Autumn term, we took the opportunity to make a variety of new designs.

While many of the original toys continue to be popular choices, for example Peter Rabbit and Eeyore (sometimes in a dazzling colour scheme though!), we have also branched out into Wind in the Willows with Mr Mole and there is a family of mice in the making, a foal and a puppy!

ROCK BAND

This term our pupils have had a lot of fun making a lot of noise in the Rock Band hobby. They have been working on a performance of ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ by My Chemical Romance and next term the group will put up a performance for the whole school!

The group have been warming up and finishing off by jamming to ‘Back in Black’ by AC/DC and, of course, ‘Smoke on the Water’ by Deep Purple.

Everyone has enjoyed the challenge of playing along in time with the rest of the rock band. It adds an extra dimension to playing individually but is exponentially more fun and rewarding however, we have had to turn all the amplifiers and microphones up to full volume in order to be heard over Aaron’s superb, but extremely loud, drumming!

“It’s great, we get to make as much noise as we like.”

“My favourite part is when we all jam along together.”

“I like having a go on all the different instruments. It’s fun trying something new.”

“Our song is sounding amazing. I can’t wait to perform it.”

Street and Break Dance

Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer Frankie who specialises in Street/Hip Hop and Freestyle Dance has been teaching our younger Year 3 and Year 4  as well as our older Year 5 to Year 8 dance groups some great new Street and Break dance moves such as:

the Shoulder Pop, Belly Rolls, Bounce Walks, Jump and Spin, Slide and Head Spins

Frankie encourages the pupils to bring their own creative flair to the classes by giving them opportunities to choreograph their own routines whilst providing them with an understanding of street dancing techniques such as breaking, tutting and krumping.

Frankie is a member of the IDTA and NDTA (international and national dance teachers associations) and puts together programmes which appeal to all skill levels.

This term finished with a colourful and short performance by each group which clearly showed how much they enjoy this hobby!

Table Tennis Hobby

This term the table tennis hobby pupils have trained hard under the direction of George Lluong and Mr. Martin. Work has been done to improve both the forehand and backhand attacking shots with top spin. George also brought in a ball machine to further improve these attacking shots which is something our pupils thoroughly enjoyed!

This term’s specific training will stand our teams in good stead for the regional finals early in the new year. As a school we have gone through to represent Norfolk in the regional finals at Under 11 boys and girls’ and Under 13 boys’ table tennis. These will be held on Saturday 14th January 2012 at Bedford. All the children have benefited from playing both singles matches and learning how to play doubles.

Netball Hobby

Our Thursday Netball hobby group have focused on competition and games in a variety of formats this term. Rotating teams, fixed areas for players and conditional play are some of the topics the girls focussed on.

“It was fun and you got to play lots of matches.”

” We got to play against the older girls which was great.”

“I loved the ‘short straw’ draw at the start to see who had to organise the warm up session. I loved it when the older pupils did the warm ups.”

“It was active and fun, we did lots of fun exercises.”

The Netball Hobby culminated in two matches – one for the younger players, of which we had six ready & fit on the day and a stand-in from Year 4 plus a team of our more senior players. The senior team consisted of five members of the regular hobby group, plus two Year 7 stand-ins to cover for the two members who were absent due to illness.

The junior game was exciting but was a match dominated by the visiting  Thoroughbred side. The senior game, also against the Thoroughbreds, was another exciting match in which the girls played well. However, we were just pipped at the post having come from behind and caught up only to be beaten 13 – 10 on the final whistle.
