Street and Break Dance

Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer Frankie who specialises in Street/Hip Hop and Freestyle Dance has been teaching our younger Year 3 and Year 4  as well as our older Year 5 to Year 8 dance groups some great new Street and Break dance moves such as:

the Shoulder Pop, Belly Rolls, Bounce Walks, Jump and Spin, Slide and Head Spins

Frankie encourages the pupils to bring their own creative flair to the classes by giving them opportunities to choreograph their own routines whilst providing them with an understanding of street dancing techniques such as breaking, tutting and krumping.

Frankie is a member of the IDTA and NDTA (international and national dance teachers associations) and puts together programmes which appeal to all skill levels.

This term finished with a colourful and short performance by each group which clearly showed how much they enjoy this hobby!

Table Tennis Hobby

This term the table tennis hobby pupils have trained hard under the direction of George Lluong and Mr. Martin. Work has been done to improve both the forehand and backhand attacking shots with top spin. George also brought in a ball machine to further improve these attacking shots which is something our pupils thoroughly enjoyed!

This term’s specific training will stand our teams in good stead for the regional finals early in the new year. As a school we have gone through to represent Norfolk in the regional finals at Under 11 boys and girls’ and Under 13 boys’ table tennis. These will be held on Saturday 14th January 2012 at Bedford. All the children have benefited from playing both singles matches and learning how to play doubles.

Netball Hobby

Our Thursday Netball hobby group have focused on competition and games in a variety of formats this term. Rotating teams, fixed areas for players and conditional play are some of the topics the girls focussed on.

“It was fun and you got to play lots of matches.”

” We got to play against the older girls which was great.”

“I loved the ‘short straw’ draw at the start to see who had to organise the warm up session. I loved it when the older pupils did the warm ups.”

“It was active and fun, we did lots of fun exercises.”

The Netball Hobby culminated in two matches – one for the younger players, of which we had six ready & fit on the day and a stand-in from Year 4 plus a team of our more senior players. The senior team consisted of five members of the regular hobby group, plus two Year 7 stand-ins to cover for the two members who were absent due to illness.

The junior game was exciting but was a match dominated by the visiting  Thoroughbred side. The senior game, also against the Thoroughbreds, was another exciting match in which the girls played well. However, we were just pipped at the post having come from behind and caught up only to be beaten 13 – 10 on the final whistle.

Schools Fantasy Football League Season 2011/2012

As a new initiative this Autumn term the school has entered into a National Fantasy Football League competition designed for schools – SFL.

Each year schools register to take part in the programme which sees pupils, teachers and parents adopt the roles of a Premier League manager, and choose a fantasy football team. They manage their team throughout the nine month season, making transfers along the way in the hope that they’ll be top of the school leader board at the end of the season and claim their prize.

The SFL competition is extremely popular with our pupils and a total of 49 teams have been entered!

For November the results of the school’s internal league competition can now be announced and the following pupils have obtained certificates for Managers of the Month with Ben’s 11 finishing top of the school:

Year 4: Ben B – team: Ben’s 11

Year 5 – James C – team: Hawk Hunters

Year 6 – Charlie N – team: Nunny

Year 7 – Jos M – team: Jodspods

Year 8: Oliver C – team: Best Team Ever United

CHICKEN CLUB

Chicken Club takes place every Tuesday during term time from 15:45 to 16:45 for our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils. The children come to look after the chickens and their upkeep and, after first changing into their boiler suits, they come to check the water, food and chicken hutch itself.

In the chicken hutch they need to collect the eggs and clean out any mess, replacing it with new clean straw. After that they are able to catch and hold any chickens – some are harder to catch than others!

Other things the children have learned about are how to clip the chickens wings, how to identify each chicken and how they eat and digest their food.

Below are some of the children’s comments on what they do, what they like and what they feel they have learned so far at the club:

“We feed and play with the chickens and get to look after them and care for them.”

“I have learned how to hold the chickens and how to clip their wings.”

“I like collecting the eggs and looking after their food and water and then look for worms.”

“I have learned that chickens don’t always mingle well!”

“I like collecting the eggs and building a log area for them to play on.”

Junior Art Club

Art Club is held in Mrs Rust’s classroom each Monday and is open to Years 3 and 4. Our art club pupils enjoy working  imaginatively, using paint, pastels, crayons and collage. This term so far we have created exotic palaces in bold colours, sunsets and silhouettes and entered a local Halloween competition. We often look at nature and famous artists and styles for inspiration and enjoy entering competitions! The boys and girls are currently working on self-portraits which will be entered into the National Face Britain Competition. Here are  some of their comments:

“Drawing and painting is fun and I liked it when we went outside to sketch and find patterns in nature.”

“I really liked looking at Op Art, which plays tricks with your eyes and then writing my name in Op Art.”

Taverham Hall School Independent Schools Norfolk

Community Sports Foundation of Norwich City Football Club run Football After School Clubs at Taverham Hall School. Over the two afternoons that they are here their coaches work with both children from our Pre Prep and Prep School Departments to help them develop their football skills. Each session is focused on a new area of football such as passing, heading, shooting, turning, goalkeeping, and match play as well as tailored to each age group’s needs and abilities. All these activities help keep the pupils fit and healthy also whilst having fun!

ICT Hobby

In ICT hobby this term the children have been given the freedom to experiment with programs that they may not have used or continue to use programs that were previously enjoyed. So far this has included Powerpoint, Serifs Drawplus and Photoplus, Scratch programming, HTML development and Easiteach whiteboard software!

The pupils have also been invited to take part in the National ICT Animation12 Competition which is open to school children aged 7-19.

They will have to design an animation about a topic that they are learning / have learnt at school.  Winners receive prizes such as laptops!

History Club

History club is open to all but tends to attract those crazy on the past. Mr Newton’s present History crew are simply mad on the subject and have created History Snakes and Ladders, played History themed board and card games and even devised a History Treasure hunt using our own, historic building!

Ryan, a History club stalwart, commented,

” History Club is awesome. We do our own ideas as well as things Mr Newton gives us. It’s great having that choice.”

Around the World Club

Every Thursday after school Year 3 and 4 members of ‘Around the World Club’ meet in Mrs Pullinger’s classroom. Book Club

This is a hobby for avid readers or for those who want to try to read a little more. At the beginning of term, the children decide on which book they would like to read as a group and our Head of English, Miss Chapman, organises the ordering of the books.

After that, the members of the book club take it in terms to lead a book club session which can take place in a variety of ways: drama, discussion, reading sections together, visualising, predicting or whatever book related activities the leader wishes for the group to undertake.

Each week, we read a certain amount of chapters in preparation for next week’s session. Of course, book club wouldn’t be complete without hot chocolate and marshmallows supplied by Miss Chapman and “goodies” brought in by the leader to nibble on during activities!

Taverham Hall’s first Hot Air Balloon takes to the sky!

Our aero-modelling hobby finished on a real high with pupils launching Taverham Hall’s first hot air balloon high into the sky!

The balloon was made from tissue paper with the individual panels being cut from a template and then joined at the seams. Each child had a hand in the project and signed the balloon.

The hot air balloon was filled with the heat from a paint stripper gun. When the canopy inflated, the children released the balloon next to the DT block and it rose to around 50 feet, before settling gently down again.

What a great achievement!
