A Fesitval of Nine Lessons and Carols

The decision to have a whole school celebration of Christmas was a real success this year at Taverham Hall.

The Sports Hall was transformed for the event with extra seating and amazing Christmas decorations provided by our Head of Art, Mrs Stamp.

The Reverend Vesey led the worship and the Chapel Choir, resplendent in their new robes provided truly excellent music. Mr Jonathan Dodd was the accompanist and the music was conducted by the school’s Director of Music, William Drew-Batty. Well over 400 attended and readings were provided by both pupils and staff.

Our choristers have been very excited about wearing their new robes and the choir looked very smart for its leading of the music at our school carol service. Due to an historic link between a past owner of Taverham Hall and a late bishop of Norwich the choir has traditionally been one of the few prep schools in the country, not related to a cathedral, to be allowed to wear a red cassock and white surplice.  However, these robes were nearly eighty years old and sadly it was time for them to be replaced. The new robes, designed by the school’s Director of Music, William Drew-Batty and his sister, Kate Langran (www.sewfabric.co.uk) are in the style of a hooded cape in blue wool, lined in red, to represent the historic link, and finished in gold trim and the school badge and seem a very fitting new addition to our choir in line with the school’s 90th jubilee celebrations.

ROCK BAND

This term our pupils have had a lot of fun making a lot of noise in the Rock Band hobby. They have been working on a performance of ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ by My Chemical Romance and next term the group will put up a performance for the whole school!

The group have been warming up and finishing off by jamming to ‘Back in Black’ by AC/DC and, of course, ‘Smoke on the Water’ by Deep Purple.

Everyone has enjoyed the challenge of playing along in time with the rest of the rock band. It adds an extra dimension to playing individually but is exponentially more fun and rewarding however, we have had to turn all the amplifiers and microphones up to full volume in order to be heard over Aaron’s superb, but extremely loud, drumming!

“It’s great, we get to make as much noise as we like.”

“My favourite part is when we all jam along together.”

“I like having a go on all the different instruments. It’s fun trying something new.”

“Our song is sounding amazing. I can’t wait to perform it.”

Romeo and Juliet

This year’s Prep School production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was so well received by the audience and rightly so. Special mention must be made to our Head of Music, Mr Drew-Batty, Head of Drama, Mrs Foulkes- Arnold and Head of Art, Mrs Stamp, who should be justifiably proud of the cast and musicians who performed superbly. Well done to all involved!

The pupils had rehearsed endlessly since September to ensure they were prepared and ready for the three performances which conclude another busy term at Taverham Hall School.

The music for our production of Romeo and Juliet was exciting.

Contemporary songs were chosen that aimed to reflect the mood and action of the story so that it became the ‘Narrator’, or as William Shakespeare would call it, ‘Chorus’. The music for the scene changes were composed by our own pupils in the band.

Romeo and Juliet was not a musical, the cast only sang two songs, and the band was physically placed on stage with the cast to be considered part of the dramatic action. Indeed, one of the singers also played the part of The Prince of Verona!

Songs

U2 – With or Without You
Kesha – Blow
The Prodigy – Omen
Johnny Cash – Hurt
Keane – Somewhere Only We Know
Adele – Make You Feel My Love

And so the story begins…
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.

The Scenes
Scene 1 – Verona. A public place
Scene 2 – A street
Scene 3 – A room in Capulet’s house

Festival of Christmas

The choir were invited to sing at The Festival of Christmas fair in Norwich Cathedral cloisters on Friday 9th December.

Our choristers sang a selection of favourite carols and Christmas songs ably assisted by Mr Martin, Mr Grimble and parents who came to support. It was a bright and sunny morning, though very cold, and the choristers all enjoyed the hot chocolate and biscuits afterwards!

Chapel Choir sing at Fishmongers’ Hall, London

Taverham Hall’s Chapel Choir travelled to London on Friday 25th November to take part in a Choral Day organised by Gresham’s School. The event took place in the prestigious Fishmonger’s Hall, Tower Bridge, London and a total of 100 singers were directed by Tom Appleton, Director of the National Youth Choir.

The amalgamated choir worked on three set pieces; Britten’s ‘This Little Babe’, Rutter’s ‘Angels Carol’ and ‘See the Gypsies’ by Kodaly. They were joined later in the afternoon by Gresham’s School chamber choir, Schola Cantorum, and worked on Bob Chilcott’s ‘For Him all Stars have Shone’.

Our choristers performed to a large audience that evening in the magnificent Banqueting Hall who were also treated to Schola Cantorum’s performance of beautifully sung Christmas music.

This has been a fantastic opportunity for our choir to work at the highest level with one of the best choral trainers in the country and it has been experience they’ll never forget:

“We liked the Shark song best – it was fun!”

“The Angel song was nice and the Gypsy song was fun too!”

“Mr Appleton was very energetic!”

Changes to Orchestra – Autumn 2011

For the next term or so the Orchestra is being restructured to help pupils build strong ensemble skills. The pupils have all worked so well and we are excited about providing the following ensembles for them. Although Orchestra will not meet on Thursdays for a while, we would like you to attend the following instead:

  • Woodwind and Brass Players – Wind Band, Music Room, Thursday lunchtimes with Mrs Godfrey

  • All String Players– String Group, Music Room, Tuesday lunchtimes with Mr Weitz

This is one time during the week when pupils can play with others and develop vital skills. We would expect all pupils to take part if they have been a member of the Orchestra. Mrs Godfrey will be planning some sectional rehearsals (small groups) to start with so look out for notices about this.

Teachers will be keeping a register of attendance so make sure you attend regularly and don’t forget your instrument!

Taverham Hall Carol Service

Please keep your diaries free for our Taverham Hall Carol Service which will take place on Tuesday 13th December @ 19:00 hours  in the school’s Sports Hall.

The Carol Service is always a highlight of the year and we do hope as many pupils and parents will attend as possible. In recent years the carol services have been organized separately between the Junior and Senior pupils. This year a huge amount of effort has been invested in making this event a ‘whole school’ celebration.

All members of the school are very welcome to attend what is planned to be a great celebration of Christmas through readings and music.

The singing will be led by the school’s Chapel Choir and Reverend Seabrook will lead the worship. Readings will be presented by members of the school.

This year the order of service is based on the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols and readings are taken from The King James’ Bible which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year.

Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Expansion of Chapel Choir – Calling Singers!

Our Director of Music, William Drew-Batty is planning to introduce Alto, Tenor and Bass parts to the existing Chapel Choir for special events.

This new move will greatly extend the repertoire of the choir and our choristers will benefit from singing with adults. We have many parents who have experience of singing in a choir, even if they are a bit rusty! We also have ex pupils of the school who have continued singing at their senior school.

It is hoped that the ‘full’ choir would sing at events such as the Christmas Carol Service, and a local concert in the Spring or Summer terms.

The level of commitment would require singers to meet for a number of rehearsals before each event at a convenient time during the school term. The idea is to rehearse the adult choir separately with perhaps one or two rehearsals with the full choir.

If you are interested please contact William Drew-Batty at the school, headofmusic@taverhamhall.co.uk for a chat.

The choir goes from strength to strength and the choristers are making an excellent sound. Don’t miss this great opportunity to contribute to the rich musical life of Taverham Hall!

We look forward to hearing from you.
