Tree Propagation

This autumn in Forest School we are developing an idea which we first trialled last winter; that is to plant seeds from various species of trees in our grounds. We hope eventually to produce seedlings, and then later saplings; both for sale to those connected with the school and also it is a lovely idea that they could be given to our leaving pupils as a lasting reminder of their time here at Taverham Hall.

In the photos below you can see Year 8 pupils preparing seed beds and planting acorns, horse chestnuts, beech nuts and cedar of Lebanon seeds. We shall observe how the various species perform in our beds, both in terms of producing healthy seedlings and also the proportions of seedlings to seeds planted.

Year 3 Potato Harvest

After planting the seed potatoes in pots back in March, the pupils in Year 3 have been eagerly waiting for the time to harvest them. The time finally arrived and with Miss Pennell’s help we harvested and weighed our crop.

The Rocket variety, grown as part of the competition run by the British Potato Council, yielded the most with 1510g, Estima, a main crop variety produced 1390g. Winston weighed in at 1270g, while Rudolf, a red variety, produced the lightest crop at 590g.

Along with the potato crop harvested from the beds behind the DT block, there were sufficient for everyone to take a sizeable bagful home. Everyone agreed they were very tasty!

Stawberries, BBQ & Games

Over the last couple of weeks our boarders have taken part in many different activities.

Earlier this month the girls and boys really enjoyed a good game of 40/40 after tea, organised by the Year 8 pupils. They all enjoyed it so much that some of the teachers decided it looked good fun and joined in. A big thank you to our Year 8s for organising this. Afterwards, our younger boarders tackled Mrs Midgley’s “From ground to table” quiz, a type of treasure hunt game in the Boarders’ Garden. The children learnt about vegetables and herbs and also tried some of the new peas and strawberries straight from the pod, which were very sweet and delicious!

Rocket, Maris Bard, Majestic, Strawberries, Basil, Sunflowers and more!

The school’s garden area next to our DT Centre was extended at the beginning of the year to make six rectangular beds and two smaller square beds.  Some of the slabs were also removed from the surrounding area to make planting areas for pumpkins (for Halloween) and butternut squash.

Two of the rectangular beds formed part of the Year 3 Potato Growing Project which is included in their Science topic, ‘Helping plants grow well’Read the rest of this entry »
