Dance Display

At the After School Club Dance Display on Wednesday 8 February the children danced brilliantly, not only with lots of enthusiasm but in step and in time to the music, no mean feet!

The 12 pupils in the dance club have obviously worked hard under the guidance of Mrs Chamberlain and we thank them for entertaining us so well. They all looked very colourful in their dance outfits. The highlight for the audience was their interpretation of some of the ABBA songs. These were carefully choreographed and performed with amazing accuracy from children so young!

Father Christmas visits the Nursery and Pre Prep!

On 15 December a very special visitor came to see our Nursery and Pre Prep children. Father Christmas came to see the children in Nursery 2 in the morning. He told them how busy he was and asked them to tell their parents not to leave out too many mince pies as he was getting very fat! He then gave each child a present and asked what they would like for Christmas.

In the afternoon the Pre Prep children had their Christmas party and enjoyed playing a variety of games as well as a sumptuous tea kindly provided by their parents. At the end of the party Father Christmas arrived and handed out presents to every child. He reminded the children that they needed to go to bed early on Christmas Eve as he would be very busy!

A lovely day and happy and excited faces everywhere!

Choir Sing at Carleton House Care Home

On Wednesday 14th December oure Pre Prep choir visited Carleton House Care Home to sing carols and festive songs to the elderly residents. There are 27 children in the choir, ranging in age from 4 to 7 years. Led by their music teacher Jonathan Dodd, the children sang a selection of carols and songs from their Christmas performance.

The residents were thrilled to see the children and joined in with some of the singing. They were so impressed that such young children sang so clearly and with so much enthusiasm!

Afterwards the children enjoyed chocolate cake and biscuits and one of the elderly gentlemen kindly gave each child a Christmas gift. We discovered that the oldest resident at Carleton House is 104 years old, whilst the youngest member of our choir is 4 years old, so they had their photo taken together – spanning 100 years. The choir then went round wishing everyone a happy Christmas before leaving.

The children had a lovely time and intend to go back to Carleton House in the Summer Term. We are very proud of them indeed!

Christmas Lunch Moments……….

On Tuesday 13 December Pre Prep and Nursery children enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner. The dining hall looked very festive with all the decorations, red and green napkins and crackers, kindly provided by the dinner ladies.

The children had all had great fun earlier in the morning designing and making their own party hats. Everyone enjoyed a turkey dinner but by special request the pudding was slices of chocolate gateau with ice-cream stars!

The Bossy Christmas Fairy

The Pre Prep Christmas production of ‘The Bossy Christmas Fairy’ has been playing to packed houses this week. Enthusiastic audiences were delighted by the superb singing, wonderful dancing and brilliant costumes. Every word could be heard clearly as our young performers spoke their lines with immense composure.

The leading role of ‘The Bossy Christmas Fairy’ was played magnificently by Charlie R. The Year 2 children took on the other major roles and gave fantastic performances. In Year 1 the chocolate Santas looked good enough to eat and the exuberant tinsel girls made everyone want to get up and shimmy! The baubles and fairy lights sparkled and twinkled. Reception snowflakes and shimmering angels completed the show.

This wonderful production was again directed by Mrs Fry and the winner of the competition to design the front cover of the programme was Tabitha in Year 1.

Afterwards Mary and Joseph – Beatrice and Edward, collected the sum of £457.34 which will go to the Pre Prep’s Christmas charity – Quidenham Hospice. We thank all parents for their amazing generosity!

Investigating Various Materials

Our Year 1 children have been involved in a project to determine the properties of different materials.  A walk around the school allowed us to investigate the variety used in the construction of a building and ask questions such as:

Why do we need glass for windows and how do we make it?

Which materials give a house strength and stability,  can withstand high winds and heavy rain and why?

In the classroom we used a variety of wooden pieces to construct a model – measuring and estimating skills were needed and tape was used to fix the walls and roof.

This project gave our girls and boys the opportunity to work in teams, collaborate ideas and negotiate strategies to eventually make something tangible.  We also looked at textures and why they were important – rough, smooth, shiny or soft, for example.  Using pipettes the children attempted to soak a variety of materials – what does waterproof mean and why do we need such fabrics?  How do we make a building waterproof?

Not only is it important  to help children to use their own independent ideas and investigations to work things out for themselves – they also had a brilliant time exploring their options!

Signs of Christmas…..

Reception classes have started preparing for Christmas! A lot of fun has been had, making papier-mâché nativity characters using washing up bottles that had been collected by the children and staff. These were then transformed into figures using newspaper and wallpaper paste. Once they have dried the children will add features and clothing, so now decisions have to be made as to whether their figure will be Mary, Joseph, a king or a shepherd.

Meanwhile, our Year 1 children have had a go at writing winter poems this week. They gathered together to brainstorm both ideas and winter vocabulary, before producing some fantastic, individual poems. Many of the poems featured snow and while the children may be hoping for snow now, staff and parents probably have a different point of view!  Signs of Christmas are also evident as there are some beautiful stained glass windows appearing.

Our Year 2 classes have been creating some amazing project books about the events of the Great Fire of London. The children are very enthusiastic and some of the accounts of the disaster are really superb. They have also used the Museum of London computer programme to look at different sources of information from that time and have enjoyed using the graphics to attempt to extinguish their own ‘Great Fire’.

As part of their science project on food the children have made their own butter which they enjoyed eating, spread on wholemeal bread.

Official Opening New Nursery Extension by Illustrator Peter Kavanagh

Taverham Hall School celebrated the official opening of its impressive new Nursery extension. The school are very grateful to the renowned Norfolk based children’s illustrator, Peter Kavanagh, who performed the opening ceremony on Friday 25th November.

Headmaster Mike Crossley said:

“ We are delighted Mr Kavanagh could find the time to join us to mark this special occasion. The children very much enjoyed his company at lunch and throughout the afternoon.”

The new build is a result of the school responding to a significantly higher demand for places which initially increased when the school extended its hours to provide full-time Nursery care throughout the year. Numbers and interest continued to surge even further when its Nursery department received an Outstanding Ofsted inspection report. The school has since received two further excellent inspection reports, one from the ISI in November 2010 who also rated its Early Years Foundation Stage as outstanding, and more recently from Ofsted in May 2011, who rated the Social Care and Boarding environment offered at Taverham Hall School as outstanding.

Sharon Turner, Chair of Governors, said

“We would like to say a special thank you to Clydesdale Bank for helping with the finance for this new venture and for their superb customer service. The project was a major undertaking as we needed to be ready in time for the start of term in September. Their full support enabled us to expedite matters allowing work on the building to commence in July thus causing minimal disruption to the school and its pupils. We are delighted with the results.”

In addition to this venture, Taverham Hall School is celebrating its 90th anniversary which makes it a particularly special year for the school.
