Taverham Hall Top Draw Launch!

The Taverham Hall Top Draw is based on the age old 100 club but we intend to tweak this idea somewhat. We aim to have 400 members who will be playing both as individuals but also as teams of four.

How does it Work?

Firstly we hope parents, guardians, friends and former pupils of Taverham Hall School will get together three friends or relatives who will join them to create a team of four. Every month each team member will play as individuals and a draw will be made in the Outer Hall with ten prizes available ranging from £50 to a first prize of £500 (providing we are fully subscribed) - all the winners will be posted in this news section each month. In addition, every Christmas, if your team has remained complete all year, an extra draw will be made with a bonus prize of £1,000 to be shared amongst the winning team.

So how much will it cost?

Not as much as you think. Entry into the monthly draw is £10 (which equates to 30p per day) for each individual member which will be collected at the beginning of each month by direct debit. There is nothing extra to pay for the team bonus draw at the end of the year.

What do I need to do now?

All you need to do is find 3 other players from your family or circle of friends and then all four of you fill in a direct debit form each and return them to the school office. Each member will then receive a membership booklet with their individual number and team name written on the front.

The official first Top Draw is planned for February 2012 so make sure you hand your forms in soon!

Where are the proceeds going?

All proceeds will go to the school’s ‘Annual Fund’ which has been set up to help fund some of the larger capital items for the benefit of all pupils at Taverham Hall School.

However, we also want to have some fun and create an extra buzz by offering some big prizes that are worth talking about and to do this we need EVERYONE involved. So please get your team together now and get signed up. If fully subscribed we will give away nearly £20,000.00 in prize money in the first year, and the odds of winning a prize each month will be 1 in 40, which beats the lottery hands-down. It could be you cashing that first cheque in February for £500…..and maybe March too!

Official Opening New Nursery Extension by Illustrator Peter Kavanagh

Taverham Hall School celebrated the official opening of its impressive new Nursery extension. The school are very grateful to the renowned Norfolk based children’s illustrator, Peter Kavanagh, who performed the opening ceremony on Friday 25th November.

Headmaster Mike Crossley said:

“ We are delighted Mr Kavanagh could find the time to join us to mark this special occasion. The children very much enjoyed his company at lunch and throughout the afternoon.”

The new build is a result of the school responding to a significantly higher demand for places which initially increased when the school extended its hours to provide full-time Nursery care throughout the year. Numbers and interest continued to surge even further when its Nursery department received an Outstanding Ofsted inspection report. The school has since received two further excellent inspection reports, one from the ISI in November 2010 who also rated its Early Years Foundation Stage as outstanding, and more recently from Ofsted in May 2011, who rated the Social Care and Boarding environment offered at Taverham Hall School as outstanding.

Sharon Turner, Chair of Governors, said

“We would like to say a special thank you to Clydesdale Bank for helping with the finance for this new venture and for their superb customer service. The project was a major undertaking as we needed to be ready in time for the start of term in September. Their full support enabled us to expedite matters allowing work on the building to commence in July thus causing minimal disruption to the school and its pupils. We are delighted with the results.”

In addition to this venture, Taverham Hall School is celebrating its 90th anniversary which makes it a particularly special year for the school.

Fantastic fireworks at Taverham Hall School

Another hugely popular bonfire night took place on the 3rd of November  which was extremely well attended. Our thanks go to staff, parents and The Friends’ Society who worked extremely hard to ensure its success.

The grounds team of Mike Skipper, Terry Havis and David Brown deserve a special mention for all their efforts and of course to Mr Mike Chapman who organised the wonderful firework display for the fourth year in succession!

OT Michael Jones Talks to Year 3 About WW2

In Year 3 we have been learning all about what life was like for children during World War 2. Last week we were very fortunate to receive a visit from Michael Jones, an ex pupil of Taverham Hall, who grew up in the war years. Mr Jones attended Taverham Hall when it was temporarily based in Wales and then Beccles, before returning to Taverham Hall after the war when the Ministry Of Defence had finished using Taverham Hall and its grounds for army training.

The girls and boys were able to ask him lots of questions about school life during WW2 and about rationing, spotting aeroplanes and air raid attacks on Norwich. Mr Jones told the children how during his time at school they would get one helping of dinner and would often feel hungry afterwards as there was a food shortage. He mentioned how the meals would be made up of local seasonal produce and that in the Autumn they would often have pumpkin with their meals.

Mr Jones also told our pupils a great tale about the winter of 1947 – the big freeze. He recalls the area outside the front of the school (currently the carpark) being used as a huge ice skating rink. He can remember one of the teachers pouring water from a hose onto the ‘rink’ to add to the ice and make it really smooth to skate on!

Turned out Nice Again

Richard Howard, Old Taverhamian and ex-member of staff at the school, has very kindly donated 2 copies of ‘Turned out Nice Again’. The book, which he has co-written with Sue Smart, is a family authorised biography of George Formby and his father.  Richard also donated a CD of a Radio Norfolk production featuring Mr Formby and both these will be available to our pupils and staff in the school library.

The book has gone on sale now and is available from various bookshops and can also be ordered via amazon.

Taverham Hall Carol Service

Please keep your diaries free for our Taverham Hall Carol Service which will take place on Tuesday 13th December @ 19:00 hours  in the school’s Sports Hall.

The Carol Service is always a highlight of the year and we do hope as many pupils and parents will attend as possible. In recent years the carol services have been organized separately between the Junior and Senior pupils. This year a huge amount of effort has been invested in making this event a ‘whole school’ celebration.

All members of the school are very welcome to attend what is planned to be a great celebration of Christmas through readings and music.

The singing will be led by the school’s Chapel Choir and Reverend Seabrook will lead the worship. Readings will be presented by members of the school.

This year the order of service is based on the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols and readings are taken from The King James’ Bible which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year.

Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Expansion of Chapel Choir – Calling Singers!

Our Director of Music, William Drew-Batty is planning to introduce Alto, Tenor and Bass parts to the existing Chapel Choir for special events.

This new move will greatly extend the repertoire of the choir and our choristers will benefit from singing with adults. We have many parents who have experience of singing in a choir, even if they are a bit rusty! We also have ex pupils of the school who have continued singing at their senior school.

It is hoped that the ‘full’ choir would sing at events such as the Christmas Carol Service, and a local concert in the Spring or Summer terms.

The level of commitment would require singers to meet for a number of rehearsals before each event at a convenient time during the school term. The idea is to rehearse the adult choir separately with perhaps one or two rehearsals with the full choir.

If you are interested please contact William Drew-Batty at the school, headofmusic@taverhamhall.co.uk for a chat.

The choir goes from strength to strength and the choristers are making an excellent sound. Don’t miss this great opportunity to contribute to the rich musical life of Taverham Hall!

We look forward to hearing from you.

School Fete

The annual school fete, organised by the Friends, took place after the Pre-Prep Sports Day and was another huge success.

Hot dogs were  served courtesy of Mr Davies being popular along with Soak the Scholar. The gap students (and Matron Ives!) made excellent targets and were extremely good sports considering the weather. The atmosphere was great. The tombola sold out as did the “Just the ticket” stall with all prizes being won. The ladies on the tea stall battled with a reluctant urn but did a grand job.The cakes in particular were a dream with several finding their way into mums’ bags rather than the stall!

More fun was had at the Egg Throwing and Coconut stalls as can be seen from the photos below.

The school’s Year 8 pupils’ help was volunteered and much needed. All were enthusiastic and willing to listen, so well done to the Year 8′s.

A big thank you must go to Mike Skipper and the grounds staff team who arranged for everything to be where it needed to be and to those parents who loaned marquees for the day and our dedicated gang of Friends and volunteers, who under supervision of Craig Martin constructed tents and set up tables and chairs.

Our thanks go to the Friends and all parents, staff and pupils who helped to make this such an enjoyable afternoon.

Parents v Staff Golf Day

Fifteen keen golfers turned out at Weston Park golf course for the first parents-staff golf day. The format was in the style of a pro-am, with each team containing a member of staff and two or three parents.

Mr Crossley, Mr Hewett, Mr Worrall and Head of Catering,  Alan Hutton, were the four staff members and we were delighted to have a range of parents from Nursery all the way through to the top of the Prep school.

The final points tally showed a draw between Mr Hewett’s team of Mr Gollop and Mr Granville, and Mr Worrall’s team of Dr Cherry, Mr Clamp and Mr Stevens.

A great time was had by all and plans have already begun for a re-match in the Autumn Term. Hopefully we can double the numbers – any new parents or Old Taverhamians who would like to be included in the next event should register their interest early with Mr Worrall on j.worrall@taverhamhall.co.uk
