LINGUATRIVIA CHALLENGE

This year, most of our Year 7 pupils took part in the new National French Competition called “Linguatrivia” organised by Linguascope. The competition was rife as over 5,000 pupils took part nationally. On March 19th, pupils had to sit a 30 minute test consisting of 50 multiple choice questions on French grammar, vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

Linguatrivia Challenge was developed by Linguascope as a motivational, extra-curricular activity for pupils learning French as yet another way to help stimulate their interest in French whilst identifying and rewarding achievement on the part of the pupils. A full mark total of 100 points could be achieved by each pupil taking part.

Although our Year 7 pupils did not win one of the major prizes, 2 of our 19 candidates stood out with 85 points (James G) and 70 points (George C) - a fantastic achievement with James only missing out on one of the big prizes by only 1 point!

All participants have been awarded a certificate and received consolation prizes such as a vocabulary wheel, Eiffel Tower key chain and a badge. Well done to all the Year 7 pupils who took part! After all, “l’important, c’est de participer!” (Pierre de Coubertin).

Willow-planting Forest School lessons

Year 7′s attempt to reach our Riverside area were made altogether more interesting than usual this week due to an accumulation of flood water after the recent rain.

Our usually dry path was accessible on Wednesday, but on Thursday the water had risen a further 14 centimetres. The relationship between the depth of the flood and the height of our rubber boots made for a wetter experience for some people than for others. However, some successful willow-planting did take place!

Crows win the House Swimming Gala once more!

This week’s House swimming gala was probably the most closely fought event anyone can remember. It all came down to the final race with Crows edging out Wrens by a solitary point!

Congratulations to Mrs Steed for her organisation of the event, matching times and pupils all the way down to ‘F level’ races. It really was a fabulous event and our thanks go to all involved.

Christmas and Face Britain Competitions

In the run up to Christmas the children in Junior Art Club enjoyed
drawing pictures with a Christmas theme to enter in the competition
organised by Abbotts Estate Agents. We had some wonderful, imaginative
work and all the children who entered were awarded certificates.

Alice was the winner with her lively picture of Rudolf the Red nosed
reindeer and enjoyed her prize of a bag containing all sorts of
goodies.

These imaginative self portraits below were created by the children in
Junior Art Club and are being entered into the Face Britain project
organised by the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts. Their
portraits will be part of a record breaking on-line gallery and will
be used for art installations across the country as part of the 2012
celebrations. The portraits will also be projected onto Buckingham
Palace to make a special portrait of the Queen!

You will soon be able to see their work and can find further information at

Owls’ Winning House Supper

At the end of another busy term, Owls enjoyed the privilege of celebrating their win with our new initiative ‘The Winning House Supper’ set up and decorated in our beautiful Drawing Room.

The evening was great fun, game orientated and a very fitting way to recognise all the hard work each pupil and member of staff had put into their studies, sport, music and drama this Autumn term.

Have a look at some very enjoyable moments of Owl’s Winning House Supper:

Soft Toys Galore!

With a small and experienced group undertaking the toy making hobby during the Autumn term, we took the opportunity to make a variety of new designs.

While many of the original toys continue to be popular choices, for example Peter Rabbit and Eeyore (sometimes in a dazzling colour scheme though!), we have also branched out into Wind in the Willows with Mr Mole and there is a family of mice in the making, a foal and a puppy!

Father Christmas visits the Nursery and Pre Prep!

On 15 December a very special visitor came to see our Nursery and Pre Prep children. Father Christmas came to see the children in Nursery 2 in the morning. He told them how busy he was and asked them to tell their parents not to leave out too many mince pies as he was getting very fat! He then gave each child a present and asked what they would like for Christmas.

In the afternoon the Pre Prep children had their Christmas party and enjoyed playing a variety of games as well as a sumptuous tea kindly provided by their parents. At the end of the party Father Christmas arrived and handed out presents to every child. He reminded the children that they needed to go to bed early on Christmas Eve as he would be very busy!

A lovely day and happy and excited faces everywhere!

Boarders’ Christmas Party

Wednesday 14th December was a special day for our boarding community – the day of the Christmas Party!

In the drawing room, party food was served to the children by some wonderful angels (Mrs Pullinger, Mrs Goldsmith and Miss Pennell) who were very ably assisted by our butler, James Bond (Mr Martin) and our musical accompaniment for the evening, Mr Drew-Batty.

Before dessert, the children were entertained in the inner hall by Taverham Hall’s very own Girl Band, “Fair Play” who performed the song ’Mama Mia’, bravely accompanied by our 2 boy gaps.  Our thanks go to Mrs Hambidge, Mrs Steed, Miss Chapman and Miss Hume who put up a fabulous performance which was greatly enjoyed by all!!!

After dessert, which included glittery snowball cakes and special edible table decorations, Father Christmas arrived to the delight of the children, who were very happy to receive his gifts of chocolate coins and sweets. Soon afterwards, Mr Crossley amazed us all with his magical tricks whilst others  enjoyed singing Christmas songs with Mr Drew-Batty and had fun trying to create snow with some special kits donated by our parent, Mrs Walker.

A big thank you also to all our kitchen and domestic staff who helped to create a superb party evening.

A Fesitval of Nine Lessons and Carols

The decision to have a whole school celebration of Christmas was a real success this year at Taverham Hall.

The Sports Hall was transformed for the event with extra seating and amazing Christmas decorations provided by our Head of Art, Mrs Stamp.

The Reverend Vesey led the worship and the Chapel Choir, resplendent in their new robes provided truly excellent music. Mr Jonathan Dodd was the accompanist and the music was conducted by the school’s Director of Music, William Drew-Batty. Well over 400 attended and readings were provided by both pupils and staff.

Our choristers have been very excited about wearing their new robes and the choir looked very smart for its leading of the music at our school carol service. Due to an historic link between a past owner of Taverham Hall and a late bishop of Norwich the choir has traditionally been one of the few prep schools in the country, not related to a cathedral, to be allowed to wear a red cassock and white surplice.  However, these robes were nearly eighty years old and sadly it was time for them to be replaced. The new robes, designed by the school’s Director of Music, William Drew-Batty and his sister, Kate Langran (www.sewfabric.co.uk) are in the style of a hooded cape in blue wool, lined in red, to represent the historic link, and finished in gold trim and the school badge and seem a very fitting new addition to our choir in line with the school’s 90th jubilee celebrations.

Christmas Doors Decorations

Our pupils have really risen to the challenge to create the most eye catching Christmas door this year – have a look below at some of their fabulous designs.

Our Head of Art, Mrs Stamp, summed up the designs well “Interesting, colourful, surreal or just plain quirky! My favourite is: ‘it’s raining pupils’ and I like the use of ties on Mrs Rust’s year 4 door.”

The Headmaster’s PA, Mrs Lara Golden, was asked to judge the competition and the winners were Mrs Pennell’s Year 5 Christmas door “lovely nativity scene, very much the spirit of Christmas. Lovely donkey!”

Runners up were Mr Martin’s and Miss Chapman’s Year 7 doors, “brilliant fireplace, love Rudolf peeking out of the top of the chimney” and “fabulous use of staff and children photographs. Mr Worrall as Rudolf”  and Mrs Rust’s Year 4 door “great kings and beautiful use of materials.”
