Year 8 pupils have fun making iMovies at the Apple Store

As part of their ICT curriculum our Year 8 pupils went to the Apple store in Norwich this week. Having been welcomed by the staff with applause, they were put in pairs and given a Macbook Pro to share learning how to use Photobooth and iMovies to create videos containing clips and pictures.

Photobooth allows you to add background and distortions to create interesting photos. iMovies gives you the options to add themes, music titles and credits to your videos.

The pupils started of with taking various images of themselves with the P application which were uploaded onto iMovie to enable them to turn these into their own movie. They were also able to add sounds and songs to their movies. After making their final touches the Apple Store staff burned the results onto CDs, the results of which will be forwarded to the school in due course. Everyone was given a certificate for their iMovies project and did the conga on their way out of the store!

“we were welcomed by staff with applause”

“we made awesome videos of ourselves”

“The apple store downloaded our video onto discs so we have great memories to keep”

King’s School Ely Windband Day

Fourteen of our wind and brass players travelled to King’s School, Ely on Thursday for a day of music making.  160 children in total took part in the band, led by music staff at the school.

After the mornings sectional rehearsals and lunch the musicians joined together to work on the three set pieces; the National Anthem, the theme from ‘Chariots of Fire’ by Vangelis and the Olympic Fanfare and Theme by John Williams.

All pupils learnt the music well after the initial sight reading period and the Jubilee and Olympic themes were presented to parents at the end of the day.

This was an excellent opportunity to perform with other young musicians and to experience the dramatic force of a large percussion section.

Any parents interested in their child learning orchestral woodwind or brass at THS should contact Mr Drew-Batty, Director of Music.

CD

There is an opportunity for the children to partake in a fantastic musical compilation as the school is recording music for a CD on 14th May. Copies of the CD will go on sale shortly afterwards.  The musical items will include a wide range of music from across the whole school including choirs, rock bands and classical music.

Snails, exploring Snake Wood and learning about fish

Year 2 have had an exciting week finding out about snails! They began the week by exploring the woods to find snails in their local environment and then set up a ‘snailery’ in the classroom. George also brought in his African snails. The children then began to gather information about a snail’s anatomy, habitats, food and movement, studying them at first hand. The class held snail races on Thursday!

The children have also had great fun painting the clay faces, hands and feet of their string puppets and are now creating their bodies, using their own ideas and designs and a wide variety of materials. Finally the class eagerly took part in a ‘continents and countries’ quiz, using maps and globes to find the answers to 20 questions.

Year 1 explored the deepest part of Snake Wood this week to discover a variety of minibeasts and toads. They used bug magnifiers to view creatures up close and held interesting discussions with their peers as to the particular species found. They even discovered an orange ladybird! The children have also been very busy creating pictures inspired by the works of Monet. These now make a superb display in the Pre-Prep.

This week Reception children have been learning about fish, through stories and art work. They have enjoyed listening to the ‘Rainbow Fish’ and this has resulted in some lovely stories and pictures. The children have also had a lot of fun making papier-mâché fish; these are now drying and awaiting painting.

Looking for Mini-Beasts and Creepy Crawlies

Nursery 1 children have been looking at mini-beasts and spring animals this week, spending the fine, dry days, exploring the woods for bugs and creepy crawlies, armed with pots and magnifying glasses. There has been lots of excitement, as the children dig and turn over logs, looking for the mini-beasts that live in the woods.

They have also been looking at and making bumble bees, ladybirds, butterflies and lambs, which have been turned into a colourful display, filling the room with lots of colour, together with the flowers they made in the previous week.

Tadpoles

After collecting tadpoles from our pond, the Nursery children have been learning all about frogs and their life cycles.  They have been caring for the tadpoles and catching them in magnifying cups to study them up close.   We have been acting out the song “5 speckled frogs” and explored some very yucky, messy green gloop.  We had great fun in making some lovely frog shaped biscuits.  To practice our numbers and maths the children joined in with a throwing and counting activity, throwing the correct number of frogs into the correct numbered bucket.

The children have demonstrated some excellent ICT skills, by drawing their own favourite bugs on the computer, worms and ladybirds where the favourites.  After a lovely walk through the woods the children created their own bluebell pictures.

Many come back for the OT Hog Roast

The OT Hog Roast which took place on Sunday 6th May was a real success with many OTs coming back to mark this special occasion for former pupils of Taverham Hall.

We were particularly honoured to have one of our oldest OTs, Mr Walter Page, and his family attending. Walter was a pupil at Taverham Hall from 1924 – 1928 and it was wonderful to hear some of his stories. Some of our younger OTs left some lovely messages in the classrooms for several of those teachers who were unable to attend on the day itself.

Stewart Orr who was at the school from 1953-1959 sums up the day as follows:

“A brief note to thank you for the splendid reunion on Sunday. One of the best there’s been for a long time – if not ever!   I was impressed with the general good manners and consideration for us old ones given by the young.   It felt very old-fashioned, and very pleasant, and something that THS has always stood for!”

Special thanks go to Lisa Green, the school’s new OT Liaison Officer, who organised this event. Many OTs provided Lisa with some good ideas for future OT events and should you wish to help or assist in any way with our OT Society than please contact Lisa via ot@taverhamhall.co.uk

The Roaring 20s Jubilee Ball

280 guests attended Taverham Hall School’s 90th Jubilee Ball “The Roaring 20s” on Saturday 5th May.

During this spectacular evening guests were treated on arrival to a  welcome drinks reception on the crescent drive whilst a vintage Tiger Moth and classic ex-RAF Chipmunk plane flew up the drive and over the beautiful school grounds in formation. The school’s very own jazz pianist Jonathan Dodd and his Bass accompaniment, Nick Moore provided the intro during the reception whilst the evening’s music was provided by the world’s best travelling live band The Gypsy Queens, who have performed for celebrities such as David Beckham, Prince Harry, Elton John and H.R.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

1920s style photographs were taken by Debby Besford and caricaturist Peter Kavanagh provided a memento of the night for many. Much fun was had in the casino lounge where many guests tried their luck with some ‘fun money’.

Catering was provided by Bespoke at The Crown and the ball was organised with the assistance of Softley Events Management.

Funds generated from the ball during the auction, silent auction and raffle will support a number of projects which will directly enhance the experience and broaden the life of the pupils at Taverham Hall.

The school recognise just how much hard work has gone into the preparation for the ball and are deeply grateful to the Development Committee and the entire Ball Committee who have worked tirelessly in recent months.

The Roaring 20s has become an amazing memorable evening!
