Of,course, all pupils whatever age are desperate to climb trees as you can also see below - it is all about teaching children to be safe and to manage their own risk, with close supervision by staff.  Just being in the woods is a very calming experience and has given the children a wonderful holiday experience!

Professional toastmaster Mr Paul Mitchell welcomed the guests and led the evening’s auction whilst photographer, Katherine Ashdown, captured those memorable moments.

EDP Norfolk Magazine photographer, Bob Hobbs , was also present and his results will be published in the magazine’s September edition.

The beautiful decorations were provided by the school’s pupils and Headmaster’s Commendations were awarded to Molly, Louisa and Pippa Crabtree, Ezra Leverett, Alexander Conway, Will Barker and Madeleine Clements for their fantastic insect creations which are still proudly hanging in the Inner Hall. We were delighted to welcome Nick Acheson, Suzie and B from Norfolk Wildlife Trust to provide expert leadership for the wide variety of activities undertaken. Activities that took the club from Snake Wood to the river bank and increased its member’s powers of observation and heightened their listening skills.

The children listened to bird song and learnt to distinguish the metronomic see sawing of the Great Tit from the loud and boisterous Wren.  They considered the fossil evidence for evolution particularly, evidence that is to be found in Norfolk. 

The boys and girls also dissected owl pellets and were amazed by just how many small mammals a barn owl eats (Joss found 5 skulls in just one pellet!)  They learnt to identify 5 of the most important flower families (Cruciferae, Umbelliferae, Compositae, Leguminosae and Labiatae) and when it rained the children were treated to a spell binding illustrated talk from Nick on ‘How to find a tiger’.  As the weather improved once more they returned to the grounds and studied birds eggs and nests and were intrigued by the trouble to which a pair of blue tits had gone to, to build not only a nest but a whole ‘garden’ for their young. 

The pupils conducted a ‘bio-blitz’, recording as many species of flora and fauna as possible (the lists that were generated will be updated and maintained for future reference).  They also went river dipping and were mesmerised by the abundant banded demoiselles before catching all manner of river dwelling creatures. 

In the brilliant sunshine of the last week of term the group went in search of grasshoppers on the set aside.  Field, Meadow and Common Green Grasshoppers were easily found and both the short wing cone head and Roesel’s Bush Crickets too.

Nature Club returns in the Autumn Term under the auspices of Natural History Clubto take into account that as the nights draw in we will have to retreat inside.  However first of all we will be setting off for the rocky shore at West Runton to study life in a rock pool and look at the fossil beds.

Sophie Wigglesworth ran well to finish 4^th  in her heat but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final. However,  pupil Annie Serruys, rose to the occasion and threw close to her personal best to claim the gold medal in the U12 girl’s discus whilst Robert Goldsmith finished 8^th place in the country with the discus only missing out on a medal by a few meters.

Well done to all three pupils for such fantastic achievements.

James Robb, Robert Baker (2 for 13 in the final) and Kieran Peters bowled and scored well, whilst Freddie Mann took two amazing catches in the quarter and semi final matches off his own bowling.

Sam Hunt (57 not out and 4 for 12) and Georgie Michael (39) stood out with their performance in the final whilst every team player showed off great skills in the field.

The elation from the players and the large gathering of spectators as the final wicket was taken, showed in the team pictures taken after the match, as all celebrated the victory!
