Thursday’s Cycle Training Hobby has proved to be a real hit with a waiting list already for the next course!
Bikeability is designed to give children the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.
There are three levels:
1. Level one offers basic bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from roads.
2. Level two is taught on-road and teaches children to cycle planned routes on minor roads offering real cycling experience.
3. Level three will ensure cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions.
The course is provided by Bob and Sue who are trained Bikeability Instructors.
So far, the children have enjoyed checking their bicycles, learning how the different parts of their bikes work, and testing out their skills on the school tennis courts.
Sue has been kept busy pumping up everyone’s tyres at regular intervals!
The children watched a Bikeability DVD which showed important skills that they have since been putting into practice, such as how to look carefully over their right shoulder before a manoeuvre; the “lifesaver look”.

Apart from the “slow race”, the childrens’ favourite part of training so far has been the team relay race, where they have to weave skillfully through coloured cones as quickly as possible!
Bob, who used to be in the army, said for him, training the children is more exhausting than commanding a thousand troops on the parade-ground!
