Years 5 & 6 trip to see 'Danny Champion of the World' - 6th March 2008

'Danny the Champion of the World' was first published in 1975 and tells the story of a young boy who lives in a caravan with his Dad, the most marvellous and exciting Dad any boy ever had. But his father has a secret - he poaches pheasants from the local land owner.

Hollie describes it thus: "Although it wasn’t a pantomime, the cast still interacted with the audience. They told us to jump up and down, clap our hands and scream as loud as our voices could go. Everyone enjoyed joining in with the play.

Usually, in theatres, you can’t see the band playing the music for the play, but on this occasion the band was on the stage. Also, the people playing the instruments were all actors or actresses in the play.

After the first half of the play, before the break, they had left it on a cliffhanger, which all left us on the edge of our seats. We all wanted to know what was going to happen.

Overall, I think that the play was well adapted from the book and it was a great afternoon."

Hollie's view was echoed by Jessica: "We all really enjoyed it. The acting was great and so was the show and all the props. We all really enjoyed the bit when they asked us to stand up, jump up and down, clap our hands and scream at the top of our voices, all at the same time. The Theatre nearly fell down. It was so loud and noisy we loved it!  But finally it was time to go home we were all tired out from screaming and everything so it was a bit quieter on the way back."

Danny and his Dad get caught up in a thrilling adventure.

Roald Dahl died 16 years ago, but his books still sell in their millions across the world and he remains one of the most popular children’s authors ever.  The book was also turned into a film in 1989 starring Jeremy Irons as Dad and his real life son Sam, played Danny.
