The Taverham Hall Classics department offers Latin to all pupils from year 6 onwards. It is at this stage that they begin their exploration of the language and the culture of the ancient Romans as well as learning about the great myths of the Greek and Roman world.
So why study Classics? There is much to be gained from studying a Classical language; the insight into the world and literature of the ancient Romans, the understanding of the language and grammar upon which English and many other modern languages are based and the training it provides for the mind. Don’t take our word for it; here is what some of our children have to say about Latin:
“It is useful because we can understand where the words we use today come from. The lessons are fun and we learn new things all the time.”
“Latin is interesting and helpful because most scientific plant’s names and chemical names are in Latin.”
“Latin helps your English, Science and day to day understanding of the world.”
Latin remains a cornerstone of the English language and other modern languages; it helps develop a deeper understanding of grammar and raises attainment in other subjects.
As a prominent public figure puts it, “It not only opens your eyes to the treasures of ancient literature, but you also learn an intellectual discipline you never lose.”
On the subject’s relevance, he adds, “The great thing about it is that it is not vocational. There is no particular career that you are being channelled into.”
By studying Latin, children develop transferable skills in reasoning and application of logic. It is a good companion to many subjects: In Music, the rhythmic nature and flow of the language, in Mathematics, in solving patterns and sequencing. We also work closely with the English department and the mythology opens up opportunities for projects in Art.
Here at Taverham Hall the Latin department is at the forefront of modern teaching techniques. We pride ourselves on delivering imaginative, thought provoking lessons where the pupil’s ability is truly stretched. Pupils are expected to present information to each other, work in groups and display independent study skills in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

The Classics department also runs a popular Greek club which introduces the children to an exciting new language and alphabet.
The Classics department believes that studying Latin gives pupils problem solving skills as well as the opportunity to really stretch their minds. The Common Entrance and scholarship examinations in Latin are held in high regard by the senior schools and give the children the chance to show what they are really capable of.
