The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple. ~ S. Gudder
Although we realise the importance of the Common Entrance and scholarship examinations, the underlying aim of the department is to make Maths enjoyable and to teach it through understanding. Different teachers use a variety of methods and materials in order to bring the subject alive. Practical work is encouraged, interactive whiteboards are used as teaching aids and investigations are introduced when possible. Many topics are introduced at an early stage and extended as a child progresses through the school. Thus the different elements of the syllabus remain fresh in the mind and more demanding problems are encountered. Every effort is made to ensure that children are numerate and feel confident. There is regular practice of mental Maths, the use of calculators is delayed until Year 5 and even then the regular use of mental Maths continues.
