Newsletter 8 December

From the Headmaster:

I am grateful to Aggie for organizing my diary to enable me to have seen so many of the Nursery and Pre-Prep performances this week. It has been an absolute treat.

This will be the final Newsletter of 2017 and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the parents and children a very happy Christmas and a safe and healthy 2018.

Growth Mindset Assembly
On Monday, Mr Hyatt reminded the pupils about the importance of being a ‘reflective learner’; read more:

Forest School
The children have had tremendous fun collecting natural objects from our grounds to turn into fantastic woodland artwork:

It was fantastic to see such a high standard of hockey being played by the eight schools that attended our annual Girls’ U13 Indoor Hockey Tournament. Very well done to the players, who all played with wonderful spirit and collaboration. A great event to end our competitive hockey season.

It has been another full week in the Music Department starting with a Lunchtime Concert on Monday – this time, our Brass Ensemble, conducted by Mrs Wendy Bailey, our brass teacher. Sophia P (Year 5) played a solo too, and the ensemble had us in the mood for Christmas with their arrangement of ‘Jingle Bells’. Nearly 300 people have enjoyed the concert on Facebook too and you can still watch the concert, even if you missed it live.

On Wednesday our Magna Voce Choir was invited to sing at the Turning on of the Christmas Tree Lights at the Forum in Norwich. ‘Elliott’s Tree’ as it has been named looked beautiful. The Choir’s performance was incredibly well-received, singing two of the songs we will all be able to hear and enjoy at our Carol Service next week.

Thursday morning’s Musical Treat was provided by our String Orchestra. Mrs Martin and the children have worked incredibly hard and are producing a wonderful sound. They performed a Canon as well as ‘Carol of the Bells’, a technically difficult piece that they executed wonderfully.

We finished our week on Friday with a Lunchtime Series Concert by the Neat Beatz Drum Kit Ensemble and this went out live on Facebook too.

I am very excited about a full – ‘wonder-full’ – week ahead, with Soirée 2 on Monday evening, Carols Inside the Yew Hedge on Tuesday (everyone is most welcome to join us for mulled wine and a sing along!) and, of course, our Carol Service at St Peter Mancroft Church next Friday. As always, you are so welcome to join us for any or all of these musical events.

From the boarding community
Welcome to the final boarding newsletter of 2017! Once again all of the boarders have had a great week, enjoying the activities and getting into the festive spirit. There have been lots of returning boarders this week, who have been greeted with warmth by our regular boarders.

We have just had another productive meeting with the Boarding Committee which is made up of 17 full and flexi boarders. Lots of new ideas about how we can improve the boarding experience were presented and discussed in a mature way. Boarders commented that they like the way they can have their say and that lots of things they suggested at the last meeting have been done!

A wide range of activities has been on offer this week which enabled the boarders to relax and enjoy each other’s company. A highlight for the Houseparents was watching the boarders all work together and use their imagination in decorating the dorms.

We are very aware that the boarders are getting very tired as it is late in the term, so we are giving them every opportunity to relax and recuperate. Many boarders are getting better at talking to us about how they are feeling so we are aware of their individual needs. Please encourage your child to keep talking to us all so we can help them the best way.

We all welcomed returning boarders this week. Welcome back to Alex M and Ellery F. Also welcome to the many boarders who stayed extra nights this week, great to see you all.

Please remember next Thursday is the boarders’ trip to Norwich Theatre Royal to watch ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Final Assembly is now in the morning, with children in their forms at 14:15. We are leaving at 15:00 sharp and we will meet in the Outer Hall. We can’t be late!

Monday: High Altitude Trip
A trip to the trampoline park is always popular with the boarders; once again, excellent behaviour from everyone means we can continue to organise them. Children enjoyed dodgeball, basketball, the foam pits or simply bouncing the night away. Well done to everyone and thanks to Mr Hyatt and Miss Williamson for driving buses.

Tuesday: Festive Fun
This was a chance for the boys to decorate their boarding house with a Christmas tree, lights, tinsel and anything else they could find. The aim was to make the tree better than the girls’ dorms – not sure if they succeeded because the girls’ tree is amazing! We even had a massive countdown and light switch on by our very own celebrity…Danny Whittred. Well done to everyone!

Wednesday: Fun Swim, Tuck Shop and Movie Night
Our regular Wednesday boarding activity gives the boarders a chance to relax in the pool and then enjoy our tuck shop. This is proving really popular with everyone, with activities ranging from a game of water polo, diving competition and some simply relaxing on the floats.
Boarders can wear any swimming costumes so that their school costumes remain dry for lessons.
Please can the boarders have £1 if they would like to buy sweet from the tuck shop. Weekly boarders can use the boarding bank.

Thursday: Christmas Party
It was certainly a party to remember! The Boarders’ Christmas Party got off to a festive start with a drinks reception in the Inner Hall with carols played on the piano by Miss Briggs and sung by Mr Conway. To read more and see photos, visit

Things to remember for coming weeks:
• All boarders will be asked to read for 10 minutes at bedtime. Therefore, please ensure your child has a suitable book with them to read. Ideally their school reading book!

Activities next week
• Monday – Sports Hall games
• Tuesday – Christmas Carols in the Yew Hedge
• Wednesday – Fun Swim and tuck shop
• Thursday – Panto!

Can we please remind boarding parents that all items (uniform, home clothes and bedding) should be clearly labelled with sew-on nametapes in a visible position (shirts should be labelled on the collar, skirts/trousers on the inside back of the waistband). This is in preference to ‘iron-on’ labels or permanent marker – pen vanishes and iron-on labels become detached during the wash, making it very difficult for our staff to then determine who items belong to.

Mrs Allison Skipper writes:
We have had a lovely week in Pre-Prep and Nursery with preparations for all things Christmas-related and performances of our Christmas productions. I am immensely proud of all of the children and the staff for their hard work in producing these and I hope that you enjoyed watching them as much as we have all enjoyed performing them. Staff have kindly written a review of each of the different year-group performances (see below) and photographs have been taken by Trevor from DE photo; a link to view the photos is contained in the newsletter covering email from the Headmaster’s PA, Aggie Blane.
