It is well documented that an adult will spend many hours in the future involved in leisure and recreational activities. As well as the benefits of fresh air and exercise, sport also brings out personal qualities such as team spirit, pride, leadership and fair play. Consequently health and fitness are promoted through a wide sporting programme at Taverham Hall School and everyone is encouraged to join in and have fun at all levels of ability.
Sport at Taverham Hall is geared to performance, participation and enjoyment. We are fortunate to have wonderful outdoor and indoor facilities including an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a superb sports hall and the availability of an astra-turf pitch. The fantastic outdoor pitches are set against a woodland back drop which is simply breath taking.
Sport is taught three afternoons a week coupled with additional PE and swimming lessons. As well as all the traditional disciplines such as rugby, netball, cricket, rounders, hockey, athletics and tennis, there are plenty of extracurricular sporting activities such as riding, karate, golf and dance. Having our own stretch of river frontage opens up a whole new world of possibilities, from fishing to canoeing which is enormously popular and undertaken with great relish.
Pupils follow a progressive and challenging games curriculum in which they are encouraged to enjoy sport as a team player whatever their skill level. Teams are generally selected on ability, although there are other factors such as attitude, effort and behaviour that will influence selection.
We compete in weekly regional fixtures and endeavour to run as many teams as possible in every age group to allow as many children as possible to represent the school each season. For exceptionally talented individuals there will be the opportunity to compete out of their age group when it is deemed beneficial to do so for the pupil and the school team. There are also House matches each term, the points from all age groups count equally towards the final House cup. At the end of each term colours are awarded to outstanding performers in the major sports.
In recent years teams have won inter school cricket and netball tournaments, many pupils have represented their county and taken part in regional and national competitions - one of our pupils became the national downhill ski champion whilst an Under 12 pupil won a gold medal for the discus event at the 2010 National Prep School’s Athletics Tournament in Birmingham.

The IAPS Code of Practice for coaches, match officials, pupils, parents and spectators was formally adopted by IAPS Council on 30 November 2010 for sport in IAPS schools.
Sport is a very important element of life in our school. It is participated in and enjoyed by large numbers of boys and girls of all ages and abilities. This code of conduct aims to ensure that this enjoyment and participation remain at the heart of all we do.
